Film Review: SMILE 2 (2024) The Price of Fame: When Trauma Goes Platinum.

Smile 2 is a sequel that knows it has to go bigger, bolder, and meaner to justify its existence, and director Parker Finn delivers a viciously effective follow-up. While the first film successfully grounded its trauma-as-demon concept in a psychiatric setting, this entry pivots the terrifying rictus grin onto the colossal stage of pop stardom, making for a compelling and unsettling social commentary wrapped in unrelenting supernatural horror.

The film follows Skye Riley (Naomi Scott, in a career-defining performance), a global pop idol staging a massive comeback tour after a year-long hiatus following a tragic accident. Unfortunately, her road to redemption is violently interrupted when she witnesses a horrifying suicide, passing the ubiquitous, curse-carrying entity onto herself.

Beyond the Jumpscare Analysis: What elevates Smile 2 is its sharp thematic focus. Finn uses the pop star aesthetic as a horrific funhouse mirror, contrasting the forced, public happiness demanded of celebrity with Skye’s intense private turmoil, addiction, and survivor's guilt. The pressure to "just smile" for the camera becomes literalized as the demonic entity feeds on her insecurity, presenting her with nightmarish visions in packed concert arenas and lavish public settings.

The film is far more polished, leaning into massive set pieces and a higher gore quotient than the original. While the jump scares are plentiful, the genuine horror comes from watching Skye’s reality—and her career—spectacularly fracture in front of millions. Naomi Scott's committed portrayal of a woman spiraling into isolation in the most visible job on Earth is truly the film’s anchor. Although it occasionally overindulges its two-hour runtime, Smile 2 ultimately succeeds as a nasty, intense, and surprisingly poignant critique of the demands of fame. It’s a sequel that earns its place by expanding the franchise's lore and leaving the audience with an earned, crooked grin of dread.
